The pain woke me, as always. But this morning was different. I didn't just feel the cracking of my bones, but a deep, muscular memory. The pressure of Matt's body on my back. The touch of his teeth on my shoulder. The taste of blood was still there at the root of my tongue, sweet and metallic. I got up. In the mirror, I looked at the purple-blue blotches of bite marks. I didn't cover them. They were a sign. Of a new reality.
The poisoning in my bones began again around ten in the evening. But now I wasn't afraid of it. I longed for it. It was the gate to change. To freedom.
At the docks, the air was thick with the smell of seawater, rust, and decay. Matt waited in the shadow of a container. Motionless. His gray eyes glowed in the dark like two embers. Without a word, he handed me a crumpled, dirty handkerchief. I smelled it. Sweat, cheap cologne, and underneath, a sharp, animal fear. The target.
"On the boat," he said hoarsely. "Three. The cargo is below." I nodded. Words weren't needed.
The boat was a dilapidated fishing vessel, the name "Neptune" barely readable. On deck stood a fat, hairy man-the captain-and two muscular figures. From below, from the hull, came muffled sobbing and pleading. People. Cargo.
Matt caught my gaze. A moment. Then movement.
The attack happened in silence. Two shadows that appeared from nowhere. Matt leaped at the captain. His hand-no longer a human hand, but a clawed paw-clamped onto the man's throat, stifling the shout. I got the first bodyguard. Bone cracked in my grip as I pinned him to the ground. The other bodyguard raised his weapon but didn't fire. His eyes gaped as he saw what we were. What we were. He turned to jump off the boat. With one leap, I was on his back.
Suddenly there was silence on the deck. The sobbing from below stopped. Then a scream. A door slammed. Feet ran on the cobblestones of the pier. The slaves-seeing the chance, terrified of the monsters-fled. They didn't stay to see the end. Only ours remained.
Three men lay on the deck. Two were already unconscious. The captain was still breathing, his eyes wildly wide with fear.
Matt looked at me. In his gray eyes there was no question. Only a dark, agreeing hunger. The smell of blood, sweet and sour, triggered something deep in my gut. Not disgust. Desire.
"Let's begin," I growled. My voice was no longer human.
The captain was first. Matt's claws dug into the muscles of his thighs, spreading them apart. The man screamed, but the sound was choked. Matt's body, huge and covered in silvery fur, stood over him. His genitalia was animal-sized, hard and erect, the purplish-red glans terrifying in the dark fur. There was no foreplay. With a brutal, tearing motion, he penetrated. Bone cracked. The captain's body convulsed.
Meanwhile, I went to the first bodyguard. I flipped him onto his stomach. His back was torn from my claws. My own sex was the same kind of monster, hot and throbbing, veins standing out under the taut skin. I knelt behind him. My two hands-my paws-gripped his hips. No preparation. No mercy.
I entered him.
