The smell of blood was still there. On the concrete, on their own skin, inside each other’s bodies. But the wolf had receded, the fur retracted beneath the skin, the bones cracking and painfully realigning into the human frame. Viktor lay on his back, his chest throbbing from the fresh wounds – now just pink, rapidly healing lines on his skin. Matt’s head rested on his chest, but his teeth were no longer sharp, his jaw was human, a hard bone beneath Viktor’s skin.

Silence. Not the silence of combat tension, but an exhausted, empty silence. Like after a storm. The air still held the haze of sex and defeat.

Matt moved first. He lifted his head. His eyes were no longer yellow, but his usual dark brown, yet something wild, fearful, still smoldered in them. The human consciousness had returned, but the wolf’s memory still saturated everything. He looked at Viktor. Didn’t speak. Just looked at his face, his mouth, where the dried streaks of his own blood were.

Then he got up. Naked, bloody, injured. His step was unsteady. The human body felt weak, fragile after the wolf. He went to the rickety faucet on the wall, turned it. Cold, rusty water trickled out. He bent his head under it, rinsed off the blood, the dust, the fluids. He drank the water, greedily, pouring it down his throat.

Viktor sat up. Every muscle ached. He felt as if a truck had run him over. He watched Matt’s movements. On his back ran bloody scratches – his own. On his shoulder, a deep bite mark – his own. Guilt slid through his gut like a cold blade. But beneath it, deeper, was something else. A tension. A desire to touch him again.

“There’s something here,” Matt spoke, his voice hoarse, human. Above the faucet was an old, stained mirror on the wall. He wiped off the dust. “Look.”

Viktor stood, approached. In the mirror, two men looked back. Naked, bloody, ravaged by battle and sex. But their faces... something had changed. Deep in their eyes, the wolf still lurked, but the human part now dominated. And something else. A connection that hadn’t been there yesterday. The Pact was no longer just words. It was burned into their bodies.

“We’re disgusting,” Matt murmured, but his voice held no contempt. Rather... acceptance.

“We’re alive,” Viktor replied. That was the answer to everything.
