The sixth day arrived like a death sentence.

Viktor stood by the window, holding a coffee cup he had long stopped drinking from. The liquid had grown cold—the steam vanished, its taste bitter, much like the fear sitting heavy in his gut. Outside, the sky was leaden gray, clouds towering over the city as if heaven itself were about to collapse onto the earth.

Matt sat on the couch. He hadn't slept. He couldn’t. Dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes, his lips dry and cracked. Six nights without proper rest. The wolf hadn't let him stay quiet—it scratched at the walls of his mind, demanding to be let out, sensing the shift, the call of the moon growing stronger with every passing hour.

"Do you hear it?" Matt asked, his voice rasping, barely above a whisper.

Viktor nodded. He heard it. Not with his ears, but with his bones. His blood. With that other thing lurking in his spine—neither man nor wolf, but something ancient and impatient between the two.

The city was quiet. Too quiet. It had been like this for days. People felt it—they didn't know what, but they felt it anyway. Fewer shoppers in the stores. Fewer children on the streets. Dogs didn't bark. Birds didn't sing. Nature knew what was coming and pulled back.

"The Alpha said we meet at the warehouse tonight," Viktor said, setting the cup down. The porcelain clinked against the table—a tiny sound that rang through the silence like a bell.

"At the warehouse?" Matt repeated. "Not in the forest?"

"No. He said the warehouse is closer to... the gate."

"The gate." Matt swallowed hard. "So it's true. There is a gate."

"There always was. It just wasn't open."

Silence.

Viktor sat next to Matt. The couch groaned under them—old, worn leather that had seen too much. Viktor placed his hand on Matt’s knee. Not sexually. Not gently. But the way two people hold onto each other when the ground begins to shake beneath their feet.

"Are you scared?" Viktor asked.

Matt looked at him. His eyes—gold, always gold, but now darker, like old coins—didn't try to lie.

"Yes. Are you?"

"Yes."

"Good." Matt squeezed Viktor’s hand. "If you're not scared, you don't know what's waiting for you."

The sun set.

The sky burned in violent shades—scarlet and orange, as if the horizon itself were bleeding. The clouds drifted like open flesh wounds, and the wind riding with them wasn't the city's usual draft. It was colder. Older. It carried a scent Viktor had felt only once before—long ago as a child, when his grandmother took him to the cemetery and the freshly turned earth exhaled something other than decay. Something beneath the rot. Something waiting.

The warehouse stood at the edge of the industrial district. Concrete and corrugated iron, rusted doors, broken windows no one ever bothered to fix. Factories lined the area—some operating, most abandoned. People had left this place. Slowly, quietly, like rats fleeing a sinking ship. Only those remained who couldn't leave, or didn't want to.

Viktor and Matt arrived at dusk. The Alpha was already waiting outside.

He didn't stand before them in human form. He stood as a wolf. Massive, gray, with silver eyes—an ancient creature that had lived through centuries, watching empires turn to dust. His coat almost glowed in the gloom, his scars—dozens, perhaps a hundred—flashing white in the half-light like the moon through clouds.

Wolves stood beside him. Dozens of them. Viktor didn't know them all, but he recognized a few. Different sizes, different colors, but every pair of eyes shared the same truth: tonight was different from any night that had come before.

The Alpha shifted. His massive frame dissolved, bones cracking and popping as the fur receded, leaving an old man in his place—tall, lean, his skin mapped with as many scars as the craters of the moon. He was bare, but he didn't care. His eyes remained silver.

"Fifty-three," he said. His voice was deep and resonant, like old wood that had endured a thousand storms. "Fifty-three wolves. That's how many came."

"We're few," Viktor said.

"I know." The Alpha nodded. "But everyone who heard the call came. The rest... not everyone believes. Not everyone wants to."

"You don't have to believe," a voice said from the shadows. A woman stepped forward—short, broad-shouldered, her hair cropped close, her eyes dark green like moss. "It's enough to see."

The Alpha nodded toward her.

"This is Nadia. She holds the eastern sectors. If anything comes through the eastern gate, she stops it."

Nadia glanced at Viktor, then at Matt. No smile. No nod. Just a cold, practical stare—the look of someone who knew war wasn't a movie.

"The gate," Viktor said. "Where will it be?"

The Alpha turned toward the back wall of the warehouse. The concrete there was fractured, black fluid oozing slowly from the cracks like poison from a dead vein.

"There," he said. "Beneath the warehouse is a... rift. A tear in reality. When the moon is full, the veil thins, and whatever lies below crosses over. This is the place. It always was."

"How do you know?" Matt asked.

The Alpha looked at him. His eyes—silver, deep, weary—gazed into a past Viktor couldn't see.

"Because I opened it once," he said softly. "Long ago. Very long ago. I didn't mean to. But it happened. And what came through..." He trailed off. "That's why I'm covered in scars."

Silence fell over them.

The wolves circled up, some in human form, some as beasts. The last rays of twilight died, leaving the sky pitch black—not the darkness of an ordinary night, but something denser. Heavier. As if the shadows themselves were breathing.

Then came the moon.

It didn't rise like it usually did.

Viktor felt it thrumming in his bones—first slowly, like a second heartbeat, then faster, stronger, until his entire body became a single pulsing, aching mass. The wolf inside scratched at his chest, stripped of its patience. It wasn't asking anymore. It was demanding.

Beside him, Matt was panting. His eyes turned gold—not the soft gold Viktor saw in bed, but a wild, burning gold belonging to something untamed.

"It's starting," Matt whispered.

The moon broke through the clouds. Full. Round. Larger than ever, as if pulling closer to the earth to watch what unfolded. Its light wasn't white—it was silver, cold and sharp as a blade, illuminating every shadow, exposing everything that tried to hide.

The back wall of the warehouse shuddered.

At first, the cracks simply widened. Chunks of concrete crumbled away as something pressed from behind—something that had waited millennia for the gate to open.

The black fluid surged into a torrent. It wasn't water. It was thicker, warmer, reeking of decay and a sickening sweetness—like meat left too long in the sun. The stench hit them like a fist.

Then came the sound.

Not breaking concrete or groaning steel, but a deep, low rumble traveling through their bones, their marrow, the roots of their teeth. It wasn't a sound of words, but of pure feeling—the primal seed of terror buried deep inside every living thing.

The wolves echoed it. Some whimpered instinctively—the wolf recognizing an apex threat. Others growled deep from their chests, from that raw place where instinct meets fury.

Viktor shifted.

Not slowly. The moon seized his bones and tore the wolf free. The pain was sharp—bones stretching, skin parting, fur bursting forth, claws extending—and beneath the agony was absolute freedom. That wild, intoxicating freedom known only to those who shed their own skin to become something stronger.

He stood as a massive wolf with dark fur, amber eyes, and muscles coiled like steel cables. Beside him was Matt—smaller, faster, with a gray coat and blazing golden eyes, tensed and ready.

The Alpha stepped to the front. The largest. The oldest. His silver eyes gleamed in the moonlight, and his voice—neither fully human nor fully beast—echoed across the yard.

"Wolves! Tonight is not our night. It belongs to them. The ones below. To the darkness that waited beneath the earth while we lived, laughed, loved, believing the world was ours. It was never ours. It was only on loan. And now the owner comes to take it back."

Silence. The pack listened.

"But I will not give it back. Not tonight. Not tomorrow. This earth is ours—written in our blood, guarded by our ancestors, marked by our teeth. And anyone who forgets that will learn it tonight!"

A roar tore through the air. Not from one wolf, but fifty-three throats, fifty-three chests, fifty-three hearts as one. A deep, ancient roar that shook the earth and reached for the sky.

The gate burst open.

The wall didn't crumble; it parted like flesh sliced open by a blade. The concrete peeled back, revealing no basement or dirt, but a thick, suffocating darkness that went beyond the absence of light. It was a physical entity—dense, sticky as tar, radiating a foul, sulfurous stench that turned the stomach.

And from that darkness, they emerged.

First came the sound of footsteps—heavy, unnatural, crushing the ground beneath them. Then shapes coalesced out of the black.

The first thing to cross over looked human. A middle-aged man in an office suit, carrying a briefcase, wearing glasses. Normal. Everyday. The kind of person you pass on the subway or at the corner store.

Then his skin ruptured.

Flesh tore like overripe fruit, and something else crawled out from beneath it. The body elongated, limbs twisting into spider-like appendages. The human face melted away like hot wax, replaced by a gaping maw lined with jagged bone spikes. Deep inside the throat, darkness moved.

The creature shrieked—a metallic grinding sound, devoid of human pain, carrying only raw hunger.

More followed. Dozens. Hundreds. Pouring from the void, all clad in human skin—women, men, children, the elderly—and every shell split open to unleash the monstrosities underneath. The human flesh had been nothing more than a mask worn for millennia while they waited and plotted.

The yard filled instantly.

Viktor bared his teeth, the fur along his spine standing on end. The wolf inside recognized the enemy. Not prey, but a rival apex predator invading their territory under their moon.

The Alpha howled—a sound that echoed off the surrounding buildings like thunder. The pack knew the command: the leader charges, the pack follows.

The battle joined.

The initial impact was like two massive waves colliding.

The wolves charged with full speed and unbridled fury—fifty-three beasts forged by centuries of survival.

Viktor led the charge with Matt right beside him.

The first monster—the man in the suit—lunged. The creature was shockingly fast. Bone blades flashed, slicing across Viktor’s shoulder. Blood spilled, hot and stinging, but Viktor didn't falter. He clamped his jaws around the creature's neck—or the hard, segmented structure where a neck should have been—and bit down hard. Its blood tasted like thick, burning oil, scalding his mouth.

The monster shrieked and thrashed, but Viktor held on, twisting his head until the creature's neck snapped.

The body twitched once before collapsing, instantly disintegrating into ash that scattered in the wind.

One down. Hundreds to go.

Matt struck to his left. The gray wolf moved with terrifying agility. The beast he targeted was larger, its bone scythes longer. Instead of going for the throat, Matt targeted the spider-like legs, severing them with deep claw strikes. The monster stumbled, and Matt leaped, sinking his teeth into its neck until black blood sprayed across the pavement.

More poured through.

The Alpha fought at the center—a force of nature. His gray coat flashed silver under the moon as claws and teeth tore through anything in reach. Two monsters set upon him at once. He crushed the chest of one with a single swipe, turning it to ash, while snapping the neck of the other in his jaws.

Yet the tide didn't ebb.

The warehouse yard turned into a slaughterhouse. Black fluid mixed with crimson wolf blood, pooling like tar and fire on the concrete. Bodies littered the ground—monsters dissolving into ash, and wolves that wouldn't rise again. Viktor watched a young wolf—barely more than a pup—fall as a bone blade pierced his chest. As life drained from the animal, the body shifted back into a human boy, no older than twenty, his pale face illuminated by the cold moonlight.

Viktor unleashed a guttural roar—not of pain, but of pure, unadulterated rage.

The next monster stood no chance. Viktor tore into its throat, ripping through flesh and bone, before hurling himself at the next, his instincts driving him like a violent machine.

Matt stayed by his side, a relentless partner in the carnage. When a monster blindsided Viktor, Matt intercepted it, taking a glancing blow to save him before tearing the beast apart.

"Viktor—left!" Matt’s warning came as a low, raspy bark that only the pack could understand.

Viktor spun. A bone blade sliced the air where his neck had been a fraction of a second earlier. He ducked beneath the creature's guard, driving his claws deep into its underbelly. The beast split open, spilling a thick, writhing darkness onto the ground before collapsing into nothingness.

Time lost all meaning.

Minutes? Hours? The moon hung suspended in the sky, a silent witness to the chaos. The battle turned into a whirling vortex of claws, teeth, blood, and shadow. At the center, the Alpha fought on, leading the line, refusing to yield an inch.

But the pack was tiring.

Viktor felt the deep ache in his muscles. The shoulder wound from the first strike throbbed with a dull, heavy heat. His lungs burned. His jaws grew heavy. Exhaustion settled over him like a lead blanket.

Matt was limping, his left hind leg badly slashed, dripping blood with every step. Still, he kept fighting.

Then He stepped through.

It wasn't another monster.

Darkness itself walked out from the gate. Unclothed by human flesh, unmasked, revealing its true, ancient form—the lord of the rift, waiting millennia for the veil to tear.

He towered over the battlefield, taller even than the Alpha in his wolf form. His body wasn't made of physical flesh, but of dense, solid shadow that cast no reflection in the moonlight. Upon his head rested a crown constructed from the bones of a thousand dead.

His eyes burned like twin coals of hellfire.

When he spoke, his voice didn't travel through the air; it vibrated through the marrow of every living thing present.

"Wolves," he boomed, a pressure so immense it forced the weaker pack members to their knees. "The final guardians. Hounds of the moon, standing before the gate I built, believing you can stop me."

The Alpha didn't kneel. He stood his ground, legs trembling, coat matted with blood, his silver eyes burning with defiance.

"Vorath," the Alpha growled, the name sounding like an ancient curse. "You wrote the prophecy. You hid it in the dark so someone would find it and fear you. But the prophecy wasn't born of your hand. It came from the Light. And you cannot stop it."

Vorath laughed—a vibration that cracked the concrete beneath them.

"The prophecy of the final night?" Vorath mocked. "The story of darkness reclaiming what is its own? That prophecy belongs to me."

"No," the Alpha countered, his deep voice carrying over the yard. "The prophecy is a warning. That darkness would come, but that the hounds of the moon would hold the line. The price we pay will be absolute, but darkness will not win!"

Vorath’s burning eyes flared.

"And who pays that price, old wolf? You?"

The Alpha didn't answer with words. He lunged.

The collision between the Alpha and Vorath felt like two worlds colliding.

The Alpha sank his claws deep into Vorath’s shadow frame. But the shadows weren't flesh. They wrapped around the Alpha’s limbs, inflicting a agonizing, soul-rending pain that echoed through his entire body.

Vorath’s bone crown gleamed as a sharp spike drove deep into the Alpha’s side. Red blood erupted from the wound. The Alpha howled in agony and fury, refusing to retreat.

Viktor saw it. Matt saw it.

"ALFA!" Viktor roared.

They charged together. No plan. No hesitation. A wolf acts on pure instinct, love, and rage.

Vorath sensed them coming. Tendrils of solid shadow whipped outward from his form.

One tendril slammed into Viktor’s chest, lifting him off his feet and throwing him hard against the concrete wall. The impact knocked the wind from his lungs, white-hot pain searing through his ribs.

Matt ducked beneath the shadowy whips, dragging his injured leg as he closed the distance. He sank his teeth into the shadow forming Vorath’s leg. The entity stumbled—surprised by the bite.

"A pathetic pup..." Vorath sneered, a note of genuine irritation in his voice. "You dare mark me?"

Matt held on, locking his jaws despite his failing strength.

A massive shadow tendril smashed into Matt, throwing his body across the yard. He hit the pavement hard and lay still.

Viktor forced himself up. His chest throbbed, but his legs held. He stepped forward—one agonizing stride after another. His rage burned away the exhaustion, fueled by love for his fallen mate, his dying leader, and his wounded pack.

Vorath turned his burning gaze toward him.

"Another one? You think a single wolf can alter the end?"

Viktor didn't waste breath on an answer. He sprang.

He didn't target the shadowy chest or throat. He went straight for the crown—the source of Vorath’s anchor to this realm, the key keeping the gate open.

Viktor’s claws slammed into the bone crown. Cracks spider-webbed across the surface. Vorath let out a terrible, unnatural shriek as genuine pain pierced his dark core.

Shadow tendrils lashed into Viktor’s back, tearing flesh, but Viktor refused to let go. He locked his jaws around the bone structure and bit down with everything he had.

Then the Alpha joined him.

The ancient gray wolf dragged his broken body up, leaping at Vorath’s back. His claws tore into the shadow form while his jaws clamped onto the opposite side of the crown. The oldest and one of the youngest fought side by side against the darkness.

The crown groaned. Vorath screamed as the shadows comprising his form began to destabilize.

Matt forced himself to his feet.

With his golden eyes blazing through the pain, the gray wolf limped forward, charging alongside the remaining survivors of the pack. Nadia led the rest, her green eyes burning with savage intent.

Together, the pack descended upon Vorath.

Fifty-three wolves—living and dead—exerted their full might against the ancient terror.

With a deafening crack, the bone crown shattered into pieces.

Vorath’s red eyes extinguished like blown-out candles. His shadowy form dissolved rapidly, unraveling like thread caught in a gale. He unleashed one final, despairing cry before his essence was sucked backward toward the rift.

The gate snapped shut.

The concrete wall sealed itself seamlessly, the cracks vanishing, the black fluid evaporating into nothingness.

The moon’s light shifted from a harsh silver to a pure, brilliant white. In its glow, the remaining monsters disintegrated into dust, carried away by the night wind.

Then, absolute silence settled over the yard.

The quiet was deafening.

Viktor shifted back into his human form, collapsing onto his hands and knees. His skin was bruised, bloody, and cold. His breath came in ragged, painful gasps.

Matt dragged himself over, returning to human form as well. His left leg was badly injured, his face matted with blood, but he remained standing, his golden eyes filled with quiet grief.

The surviving pack members gathered in human and wolf forms alike, their eyes fixed on the center of the yard.

Where the Alpha lay.

He lay on the cold ground in his human form—his final shift, a parting gift allowing him to die as a man rather than a beast.

Deep wounds carved through his chest and side, life spilling onto the dark concrete. His chest rose and fell in shallow, agonizing bursts. His silver eyes, fading fast, found Viktor.

Viktor scrambled to his side, taking the old man’s calloused hand. "Alpha..."

"Don't," the Alpha rasped, his voice barely a breath. "There's no time. Listen."

Viktor leaned in.

"The prophecy..." the old man whispered, coughing up blood. "The darkness was halted. The price was paid... but we held."

"Save your strength—"

"Listen to me!" The Alpha gripped Viktor’s hand with surprising strength. He looked toward Matt. "Matt... come here."

Matt dropped to his knees on the Alpha’s other side.

The dying leader held both their hands, linking them together.

"You two... are the pack now," he wheezed, his silver eyes dimming like twilight. "The pack doesn't live because of one leader... it survives through those who protect each other. Who love each other. I learned that over centuries. The strongest isn't the leader... it's the one who gives the most."

A harsh cough shook his frame.

"Viktor..." he whispered. "Guide them. They need a alpha. Not just one... but both of you. Together."

Tears burned Viktor’s eyes.

"The moon shines..." the Alpha murmured, his gaze drifting upward toward the night sky. "The pack lives. That is... enough."

He exhaled one final, long breath. His chest settled. The grip on their hands loosened, and his eyes went still.

The Alpha was gone.

The moon bathed the yard in clear white light.

Around them, the surviving wolves stood in solemn silence. Some wept quietly; others bowed their heads in reverence for the leader who had carried them through centuries.

Matt knelt by the body, gently resting a hand on the old man's face. Tears tracked through the dust on his cheeks.

Viktor stood slowly. The grief weighed on him like a mountain, but beneath it lay a profound, quiet certainty. The battle was won. The gate was closed. The world above remained safe.

He looked at Matt, extending his hand. Matt took it, their fingers intertwining—two survivors, bound by blood, love, and shared destiny.

"What do we do now?" Matt asked softly.

Viktor looked up at the full moon hanging high above the quiet city.

"We live," Viktor said. "We protect the pack. We guard the gate. The Alpha fulfilled his duty. Now it's our turn."

Matt nodded, his golden eyes reflecting the steady light of the moon.

Together, side by side, they stood over their fallen leader among the quiet remains of the night, ready to face whatever dawn would bring.

The order of the world was restored.

The darkness remained below.

The world above was theirs.
