The London fog did not lift; it settled like a damp, brown blanket over the city. George stood in the windowless storage room of Scotland Yard, holding the black leather notebook in his hand. It wasn't the official investigative notebook. He had found it a year ago in a secret drawer of Victor's desk, when the inspector was ill and he was handling his papers. The notebook was full of drawings, sketches—not of streets, but of faces. Men's faces. None were labeled with names, only with dates and places: "The Griffin's Nest – L.W." – "The Swan & Anchor – J." The last entry was fresh, dated yesterday: "The Gilded Cage – masquerade evening. Wapping. Midnight."

George's fingers gripped the notebook's hard cover. This was the evidence. Victor's second life. The secret map to his desires. And George was now using this map to enter that life himself. The fear—that suffocating suspicion that Victor could have been Ashford's murderer—and the desire—that mad hope of finally getting close to him—had fused in him into an obsession. He had to save Victor from himself. And save himself from Victor.
